This big worm bait is a thick, soft copy of a sea earthworm, 14cm long and 8.5g in weight, made for sea fishing. The lot holds 6 pieces, so you have spares for snags and for fish that tear the bait.

Sea worms live in sand and mud along the shore, and the sea washes them out after storms and on big tides. Many sea fish search the bottom for them. A long, thick soft bait gives a strong, natural profile that fish can find in coloured water, surf and low light. Unlike a natural sea worm, it does not need digging or a cool box, it stays on the hook on a hard cast, and you can use it again after a fish.

The 14cm body and 8.5g weight give the bait some mass of its own, so it casts better than a light soft bait and sinks without much extra weight. Rig it on a jig head or a weighted hook and bounce it slowly along the seabed, or fish it on a light running ledger and let the tide move it. You can also hook it once through the head on a drop shot so the long body hangs and sways above the bottom.

Fish it slowly. Short lifts, long pauses and small drags keep the bait close to the seabed where fish search for food. In surf, let the waves roll it on a tight line and watch the rod tip. In calm water, give it the odd small twitch to make the thick body bend and wave. Strike when you feel a pull, a series of taps or the line goes slack.

Rinse the baits in fresh water after each trip to the sea and dry them before you put them away. Store them straight so they keep their shape.
