Metal Jigs
Metal jigs are heavy, compact lures for long casts and deep water, used for shore casting, slow jigging, boat jigging and trolling in fresh and salt water, for predators such as mackerel, pike and barracuda. We stock micro and small jigs for streams and light game, shore cast jigs for distance, slow shaking jigs for a fluttering fall, fast sinking boat and deep sea jigs for depth, and glow, laser, rattle and spin tail jigs for extra attraction. Weights run from 3g to 80g, from $5.99.

What Are Metal Jigs?
A metal jig is a dense, slim lure that packs a lot of weight into a small shape. It casts far, sinks fast and reaches fish that lighter lures cannot. Most metal jigs have little built-in action, so you bring them to life with lifts, snaps and pauses that copy a hurt bait fish.
How to Fish Metal Jigs
From the shore, cast out, let the jig sink to the depth you want, then wind it back with sharp rod lifts or a fast steady retrieve. From a boat, drop the jig straight down to the bottom, then lift and let it fall again. Most strikes come as the jig flutters down, so keep in touch with the line on the drop.
Slow Jigs and Fast Sinking Jigs
- Slow shaking and slow sinking jigs: a wide, flat body that flutters and glides on the fall for fish that will not chase.
- Fast sinking and boat jigs: a slim body that drops quickly through current to deep fish.
- Shore cast and long cast jigs: a compact shape that cuts through wind for distance.
- Vibration and spin tail jigs: add vibration or flash on a straight retrieve.
- Glow, laser and rattle jigs: add light, flash or sound in dark or murky water.
Choosing the Right Jig Weight
Pick a weight that reaches the bottom and still lets you feel the jig. Light jigs from 3g to 10g suit streams, ports and light game. Heavier jigs from 40g to 80g hold depth in strong current and deep water from a boat.
Metal Jigs for Fresh and Salt Water
Small metal jigs catch trout, perch, bass and pike in fresh water. In salt water, they take mackerel and other fast fish that hunt bait near the surface or the bottom. Rinse jigs and hooks in fresh water after each sea trip, and check local rules for the species you target.
Metal Jigs FAQ
What is the difference between slow and fast jigs?
Slow jigs have a wider, flatter body that flutters and glides as it falls, which tempts fish that are not feeding hard. Fast jigs are slimmer and drop straight down, so they reach deep fish quickly in current.
What weight of metal jigs should I use from the shore?
Start light and go heavier only when you lose touch with the jig. A jig of 10g to 30g covers many shore spots, while lighter jigs suit calm water and heavier ones help in wind, depth and current.
Why am I not getting bites on the drop?
Slack line hides bites as the jig falls. Keep light tension on the line during the fall and watch it closely. If the line jumps, stops or goes slack early, set the hook at once.
