Frog Lures
Frog lures are soft topwater baits that copy a frog on the surface, used to catch bass, snakehead and pike over weeds, lily pads and open water in fresh water. We stock weedless and double hook frogs for heavy cover, popper frogs that spit water, spinner and propeller frogs that add flash and noise, long cast snakehead frogs for distance, and small tadpole, egg and spider frogs for a smaller profile. Sizes run from 5cm to 11cm and weights from 5g to 15g, from $5.99.

How Frog Lures Work
A frog lure sits on the surface and moves like a real frog swimming or hopping between plants. Fish strike from below, often with a loud splash. A soft body squashes when a fish bites, which helps the hook reach the fish.
Frogs for Heavy Cover
Thick weeds, pads and floating mats hold fish that most lures cannot reach. Weedless frogs, and frogs with a double hook that rides tight to the body, slide over this cover with fewer snags. Cast past the target, then hop or drag the frog across the top.
Popping, Walking and Spinner Frogs
In open water and thin cover, the action matters more. A popper frog has a cupped mouth that pushes water each time you twitch the rod. Short, even twitches with slack line make a frog walk from side to side.
Spinner and propeller frogs add flash and a buzz on a steady retrieve. These frog lures suit fish that hunt by sound and movement near the surface, and a steady wind also covers more water while you search for active fish.
Choosing Frog Lures by Size and Weight
Match the frog to the fish and the cast. Small frogs of 5cm to 6cm land softly and suit calm water, while bigger frogs push more water and show a larger profile. Heavier frogs cast farther and hold their line better in wind.
Gear for Frog Fishing
Most anglers fish frog lures on a strong rod with plenty of backbone and braided line, because a fish hooked in weeds must come out fast. Braid also slices through stems that would hold mono. Check local rules for the fish and waters you plan to fish.
Frog Lures FAQ
What fish can I catch on a frog?
Bass are the usual target, but snakehead, pike and other predators that feed at the surface also hit frogs. Smaller frogs can also tempt panfish. Fish them anywhere you see weeds, pads or bait moving on top.
Why do I miss so many bites?
Many anglers strike too early. When the water explodes, wait until you feel the weight of the fish before you set the hook. A fish that misses the frog will often come back if you leave it still for a moment.
When do frog lures work?
They work when fish feed near the surface, often in low light and around cover such as weeds, pads and overhanging trees. On bright days, cast tight to shade and cover, where fish wait in ambush for prey.
