Every hook goes dull with use. Rocks, weed, the bottom and the jaws of fish all roll or blunt the point, and a dull point slides off instead of setting. The quickest test is to drag the point lightly across a thumbnail: if it skates instead of catching, it needs a few strokes. The grooves hold the hook point in line while you file, which makes it easier to keep the angle even. Work from the barb toward the tip in short strokes, filing the sides of the point to form a fine edge, then test again. A few passes after each snag or fish keep your hooks setting cleanly. Brush the grooves clear of filings and keep the file dry between trips.
