This slow sinking jig is a metal jigbait with a slow shaking, drift down action and a colourful finish, made for mackerel and offered in 14g or 20g. Instead of dropping straight to the bottom like a sinker, it drifts and wobbles on the way down. That slow fall keeps the lure in front of fish for longer, and it looks like a small baitfish that is tired or hurt, which is just what a hunting mackerel looks for.

The colourful finish adds attraction in clear water and helps the jig stand out when the light is poor. Combined with the flutter on the drop, it gives fish two reasons to look: movement and colour.

Choose the weight to suit where you fish. The 14g is a good fit for a light spinning rod in calm water, harbours and piers, or when fish are feeding high in the water. The 20g casts further, gets down faster and copes better with wind and tide, so it is the better pick for open beaches, rock marks or a drifting boat.

To fish it, cast out and let the jig drift down on a semi-tight line, counting as it sinks. If you get a bite at a certain count, return to that depth on the next cast. Work it back with short lifts of the rod, winding in the slack as the jig drifts down again between lifts. Watch the line closely on each drop, as most takes come while the lure is falling and often show only as a twitch or a sudden slack line. When mackerel are near the surface, a faster retrieve with sharp rod twitches can also work well.

A light spinning rod with braid and a short leader gives good casting distance and the feel you need on the drop. Rinse the jig in fresh water after each session at sea to keep the finish and hooks in good order.
