This cicada insect lure is a floating topwater hard bait with moving wings and noisy balls inside. It is 5cm long, weighs 6g and comes as 1 piece.

When cicadas and other large insects fall onto the water in summer, they buzz, kick and flutter on the surface before they drown. Fish learn that sound and movement mean an easy meal, and they rise to take it. This lure copies a struggling cicada in three ways. The simulation body gives an insect outline from below. The wings move as the lure is pulled, so they push small ripples on the surface. The balls inside make a rattle that helps fish find the lure in ripple, shade or low light.

Cast it under overhanging trees, along grassy banks, beside reeds and near fallen timber, where real insects drop in. Let it land with a small splat and sit until the rings fade, as many takes come in those first seconds. Then use a slow, steady retrieve so the wings work and the lure crawls across the top, or give short twitches with pauses to make it buzz and stop. Because it floats, it stays on the surface every time you stop.

At 6g it casts well on a light spinning rod with fine line, which also helps you place it close to cover. The 5cm size suits fish that will not chase a large bait. Fish it in the early morning, the evening and on warm, still days, when insects are most active.

  Overall, it's very similar to the original, but the blades (wings) don't open to the back as they should. I'll try heating them with a hairdryer and bending them, of course, as this will reduce the pitch of the comb.
