This shad lure is a micro soft bait with a red worm grub profile and an oil finish, made to fish in both fresh and salt water. Micro baits have a simple job: to look like the small food that almost every fish eats, from tiny baitfish to worms and larvae drifting in the current. When fish ignore bigger lures, a small, soft bait is often the one they will still take.

The red colour is a classic choice for small soft baits. It looks like a bloodworm or a small red worm, and it stays visible in many water colours. The oil finish gives the bait a slick, natural feel, so a fish that mouths it is more likely to hold on long enough for you to set the hook.

Rig it on the lightest jig head that still reaches the depth you want, or on a small hook under a float. Light line and a soft rod help you cast a micro bait and feel the small bites it draws. In fresh water, fish it slowly around weed edges, jetties, fallen trees and slow pools, letting it drift or twitching it a little at a time. In salt water, it works from harbours, piers and rock marks for small predators that feed close to structure, and as a bait for small fish in shallow, clear water.

Short hops along the bottom, a slow drift with the current, and a very slow steady retrieve are the three retrieves to try first. Keep the line tight on the drop: small fish often take the bait as it sinks, and the bite can be no more than a light tap or a slack line. If you miss bites, go down a size in jig head or hook so the whole bait goes into the fish's mouth.
